I’m pretty fascinated with understanding what different people’s “gifts” are. Call them strengths, competencies, talents, whatever, I love seeing those unique and special things everyone brings to the table. In fact, one of my strengths is Maximizer - I actually flourish when I’m identifying what people are good at and then helping them leverage those things. I don’t know what your gift is, but I do know your calling...to serve others.
We really complicate this whole calling thing. People tell me all the time that they’re struggling to identify their calling. There are books and workshops and coaching programs all centered on this topic. Millions of dollars are spent every year to try to figure it out.
God made it really simple. Each one of us is gifted in a particular way and we have been fashioned to use those gifts. Every single gift under the sun is given in order to serve. If you aren’t sure what your gift is, find ways to serve people and you’ll probably stumble across a few ways that really make you excited or that you’re a natural at. Those are your gifts. It’s that straightforward.
Marian Wright Edelman, the founder of Children’s Defense Fund said, “God runs a full employment economy, if you follow a need you will never run out of purpose.”
You see, there is plenty of purpose all around us. Gads of it. But as long as I focus on me and my needs I’ll never find it. Why on earth would God give me a gift just to benefit me? That’s not how He works. He blesses us in order for us to be a blessing.
1 Peter 4:10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
Nothing feels better than living in my purpose. It’s the gas to the fire of my soul. It pleases my Father. It fulfills me in a way nothing else can. I dream of a world where every individual is using their gifts for the benefit of others.
Don’t know yours? I’d love to pray for you, and connect to work through how you can find it. After all, God didn’t give you a present just for it to sit unopened and unused. 😉
