Who You Were

I’ll admit, I get worked up a lot. I’m sassy for a reason, unjust or unproductive things bother me and I’m not afraid to say so. But there are few things that get my goat more than people allowing their past to define their future. It’s the most common thing I hear when people start sharing excuses for why they can’t be more than they have been. It’s all about times when they’ve tried and failed. Things they weren’t good at. Relationships that didn’t work out, opportunities that didn’t come to fruition.

Well, here’s what I’ve got to say to that....GET OVER YOUR OLD SELF!! So you weren’t great before, are you going to let that mean you’ll never get to be great? You didn’t stick with it before so that means you never will? Someone hurt you so every relationship for the rest of your life is going to be the same? That’s crazy talk! The laws of probability don’t even support that mindset!

This is even more frustrating when Christians think this way. Nothing in scripture supports it. When you meet Jesus your old self dies and you are made new. Getting to know and live as that new creation can be a process, but that process doesn’t mean you haven’t been recreated. This has nothing to do with what you’ve done, and everything to do with what God is doing.

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5:17‬ ‭NASB

“And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He *said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.””

‭‭Revelation‬ ‭21:5‬ ‭NASB‬‬

Bottom line is that your future can be better than your past, but only if you don’t allow your past to define your future. Everything in the world grows and changes, so why not me? We can’t control the past but we can influence the future so why don’t we all stop looking in our rear view mirror and focus on the road ahead? 😁
